A few weeks ago, we had the pleasure of attending Coney Island’s 33rd Annual Mermaid Parade along the Coney Island Boardwalk in Brookyln!
Now, what’s unique about The Coney Island Mermaid Parade is that it isn’t really celebrating any holiday or occasion, but what it does celebrate is a love for Coney Island’s history, art, pageantry, costuming, and charm.
We saw mermaids of all varieties, everything nautical to colorful and theatrical, all the way to avant garde and a little weird. It was a wonderfully exciting and accepting environment. The people that attend this parade every year are some of the most interesting characters we’ve ever met.
Coney Island definitely has a culture that is very much their own. Parade goers and participants alike gather each year for the carnie charm, the characters, the whimsy, and everything that Coney stands for.
