Dear Astrid,

I recently purchased two Catherine three-drawer side tables for my home and I love them!  But I want to make sure they stay clean.  What’s the best way to keep them shiny and sparkly?

Dear Curious,

Great question!  Nothing’s worse than ruining a piece of furniture you love by cleaning it the wrong way.  But you definitely want to make sure it doesn’t get dirty.

Mirrored furniture can be tricky to keep clean because it can show dirt and smudges almost immediately.  Since even the slightest layer of dust can dull the shine of a mirrored surface, regularly dust the side tables with a soft microfiber cloth to prevent dust build-up.  If you start getting too many smudges, or anything that needs something more than just a cloth, use a non-solvent based glass cleaner and gently wipe with a microfiber cloth.  Avoid spraying the cleaner directly onto the mirrored surface and instead spray it on the cloth and then wipe.  A white vinegar and water solution is a great way to maintain that perfect shine and remove any residual streaks and smears.  Most important to remember is to never use a general purpose cleaning spray since it can dull the reflection of the mirror.  Make sure you use something that is specifically suited to mirror and glass alike.
